Robert Downey Jr. is working together with Lionel Wigram to create another Sherlock Holmes story, this time as a TV series for HBO Max. His production company is producing two Sherlock Holmes TV series for HBO Max.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed today that HBO Max is currently working on a TV Series and they have two scripted interpretations of Sherlock Holmes, both produced by Robery Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey under their production company banner called ‘Team Downey‘. Lionel Wigram, also co-produced 2009’s Sherlock Holmes and 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. This time Downey Jr’s. Holmes will co-produce under his production Team Downey. Though it is not clear whether the series will be directed by Guy Ritchie or not.
The report did not uncover any details about the long-awaited Sherlock Holmes 3 and it’s also not clear whether the story will continue from the previous two movies. So there is a tiny chance that we’ve said a final farewell to Downey Jr’s. iteration of the legendary investigator. Both series are just at the beginning of development, with no casting yet. Warner Bros. TV-backed HBO Max is the streaming service to air the series on, as Warner Bros. Studios created the past two Downey Jr. driven Sherlock Holmes movies, and Team Downey has an arrangement with HBO and produces its network show, Perry Mason.
This news about the series doesn’t come entirely as a surprise. A few years back, Robert Downey Jr. showed his interest in making a Sherlock Holmes Cinematic Universe as the actor is famous for his role in the MCU as Tony Stark. “At this point, we really feel that there is not a mystery-verse built out anywhere, and Conan Doyle is the definitive voice in that arena, I think, to this day,” Downey Jr said at Fast Company’s Innovation Festival in 2020. “So to me, why do a third movie if you’re not going to be able to spin off into some real gems of diversity and other times and elements?”
Susan Downey proceeded with that string and expressed her interest currently in the possibility of a TV series through HBO MAX. “We think there’s an opportunity to build it out more,” she said. “Spinoff characters from a third movie, to see what’s going on in the television landscape, to see what WarnerMedia is starting to build out, things with HBO and HBO Max.”
Though the development of the third film started as soon as October 2011, when Warner Bros. reported Drew Pearce would write the script, however a couple of years after the fact, it was declared James Coyne would now pen Sherlock Holmes 3. Over the course of the following couple of years, Sherlock Holmes 3 kept on getting postponed and its genuine improvement status stayed unsure.
